One of the decisions you will have to make as you continue to upgrade your smart home is regarding which smart lighting system is best for you. Your decision making will likely revolve around whether you should replace your lighting with smart switches, or Smart light bulbs. Not only do they offer convenient and flexible lighting options, but they also offer a level of safety and security to your home.

In this article, I will walk you through what you need to know to select the right smart light bulb for your smart home, looking at compatibility, Brightness and Color Options, Energy Efficiency, smart features, and price. If you would like to explore setting up a smart home in more detail, you can check out my article: The Ultimate Guide to Setting up a Smart Home.

Compatibility

The first thing to consider is whether the smart light bulb you’re interested in is compatible with your existing smart home setup. If you are using a particular smart home system, such as Home AssistantSmartThingsHomeKitAmazon Alexa, or Google Home, make sure the bulb you choose is compatible with that system.

Smart light bulbs typically use different communication protocols, such as Wi-Fi, Zigbee, or Energy Efficiency

Smart light bulbs are more energy-efficient than traditional light bulbs. This means that in the long run, they can save you money on your energy bills. You should look for bulbs with Energy Star ratings, which indicate they meet certain energy-efficient criteria set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Smart Features

Smart light bulbs have a variety of features. For some of them, you can control them with your voice or through a smartphone app. Some even have built-in motion sensors that turn a light on and off when you enter or leave a room. For additional compatibility, you can also leverage a smart home automation platform such as Home Assistant SmartThings, or HomeKit to program automations that utilize existing motion sensors in your smart home to provide similar functionality.

You also have the option to set schedules and routines, so your lights turn on and off at specific times, even when you’re not home. This can give the appearance that someone is home, as a powerful deterrence to bad actors.

Price

Price is an important consideration to your decision making. Smart light bulbs can range in price from under $10 to over $50. While it may be tempting to go for the cheapest option, remember that you get what you pay for. Cheaper bulbs may not have as many features or be as energy efficient as more expensive options. Budget accordingly for  the features you need, and don’t be afraid to invest in a high-quality bulb that will last a long time while saving you money along the way.

Final Thoughts

Making the decision to incorporate smart light bulbs into your smart home is a great move on your part. With a range of brightness and color options, energy efficiency, and smart features, you will have plenty of opportunities to introduce excellent lighting automations in your home. However, to avoid being overwhelmed  by the technology, be sure to evaluate compatibility, brightness and color options, energy efficiency, smart features, and price before you purchase a smart bulb.
